Recent research has now finally proved that ‘oxbow lakes’ do not exist. For decades science has promulgated the idea that, over time, erosion and sedimentary deposits on river bends eventually lead to bow-shaped sections of river becoming totally isolated. Sceptics have long campaigned for the revision of geographic literature expounding the ‘nonsense’ of oxbow lake formation and it will now come as a relief to children and adults the world over that they no longer need to spend fruitless hours staring from train and plane windows looking for this non-existant phenomenon.
